Forest-based livelihood choices and their determinants in Western Kenya

Forest extraction is an important livelihood activity for millions of low-income households in rural areas developing countries. Understanding the choices make to extract forest products can help formulate strategies preventing strains associated with degradation. This article evaluates nature, extent and determinants among western Kenya. Data were obtained from a survey 924 randomly selected Mt. Elgon area The level was measured as aggregate value extracted, while Double Hurdle model applied assess factors influencing extraction. results show that choice engage forest-based generally higher lower asset value, membership user associations, headed by males. further although majority households’ engaging lowest wealth category, middle category found products. Institutional characteristics, including access agricultural markets, credit, extension, groups, increased likelihood extracting Overall, addition endowment, other contextual factors, such farmer groups defined whether household extracted survival or accumulation.
