Forecasting eruptions from long-quiescent volcanoes

چکیده
Abstract Forecasts of eruption are uncertain. The uncertainty is amplified when volcanoes reawaken after several generations in repose, because direct evidence previous behaviour rarely available. It fosters scepticism about warnings volcanic activity and may compromise the success emergency procedures. quality forecasts has improved over past 50 years, owing mainly to a growing sophistication statistical analyses unrest. Physics-based have yet achieve same level maturity. Their application been delayed by view that too complex share patterns can be described deterministic manner. This being increasingly challenged an emerging line inquiry understand how further integrating approaches with new constraints on possible outcomes from physics-based criteria. introduction reasoning yields rational explanations why not perfect and, as result, offers opportunities for increasing public confidence eruption.

Forecasting volcanic eruptions
Forecasting is a central goal of volcanology. Intensive monitoring of recent eruptions has generated integrated timeseries of data, which have resulted in several successful examples of warnings being issued on impending eruptions. Ability to forecast is being advanced by new technology, such as broad-band seismology, satellite observations of ground deformation and improved field spectrometers...
متن کاملLarge historical eruptions at subaerial mud volcanoes, Italy
Active mud volcanoes in the northern Apennines, Italy, currently have gentle eruptions. There are, however, historical accounts of violent eruptions and outbursts. Evidence for large past eruptions is also recorded by large decimeter rock clasts preserved in erupted mud. We measured the rheological properties of mud currently being erupted in order to evaluate the conditions needed to transport...
متن کاملHow local stresses control magma-chamber ruptures, dyke injections, and eruptions in composite volcanoes
To assess the probability of a volcanic eruption during an unrest period, we must understand magma-chamber rupture and dyke propagation to the surface, as well as dyke arrest at depth in the volcano. Dyke propagation and arrest depend strongly on the local stresses in the individual mechanical layers which constitute the volcano. The local stresses are primarily determined by the loading condit...
متن کاملSeismic Triggering of Eruptions in the Far Field: Volcanoes and Geysers
Approximately 0.4% of explosive volcanic eruptions occur within a few days of large, distant earthquakes. This many “triggered” eruptions is much greater than expected by chance. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain triggering through changes in magma overpressure, including the growth of bubbles, the advection of large pressures by rising bubbles, and overturn of magma chambers. Al...
متن کاملUnevenly Spaced Spatio-Temporal Time Series Analysis in Context of Volcanoes Eruptions
Paper presents a simplistic approach towards the detection and dynamics analysis of volcanic eruptions represented as unevenly spaced spatio-temporal time series of satellite retrieved hot spots. The paper discusses isolation and interpolation of hot spots data produced by Nightfire algorithm for the purposes of short-term volcanic activity ARIMA based forecasting. The case study for Chirpoi Sn...
