For a heterodox computational social science

چکیده
The proliferation of digital data has been the impetus for emergence a new discipline study social life: ‘computational science’. Much research in this field is founded on premise that society complex system with emergent structures can be modeled or reconstructed through data. This paper suggests computational science serves practical and legitimizing functions capitalism much same way neoclassical economics does neoliberalism. In recognition homology, develops critique complexity perspective argues heterodox meta-theory critical realism critical, methodological pluralist, interpretative explanative. implies diverting science’ methods so as to not aimed at identifying invariant laws life, optimizing state corporate practices, but instead used part broader strategies identify contingent patterns, develop conjunctural explanations, propose qualitatively different ways organizing life.

Sociolinguistics for Computational Social Science
In recent years, a major growth area in applied natural language processing has been the application of automated techniques to massive datasets in order to answer questions about society, and by extension people. Sociolinguistics, which combines anthropology, statistics and linguistics (e.g. Labov 1994, 2001), studies linguistic data in order to answer key questions about the relationship of l...

For the second time, the #Microposts workshop features a track to highlight social science perspectives on micro communication structures in online environments. This paper introduces the #Microposts2016 (Computational) Social Science Track, which all contribute to connecting research methods and approaches in computer science and social science. By providing a forum for closer interaction betw...
متن کاملOnline Experiments for Computational Social Science
Experiments are the gold standard for establishing causal relationships. While Web-based experiments (“A/B tests”) have routinely been used to assess alternative ranking models or user interface designs, they have become increasingly popular for answering important questions in the social sciences. This tutorial teaches attendees how to design, plan, implement, and analyze online experiments. F...
متن کاملComputational Social Science: Toward a Collaborative Future∗
Fifteen years ago, as an undergraduate computer science student in the UK, I read a popular science article (Matthews, 1999) profiling the research of my now colleague, Duncan Watts. This article, about the science of small-world networks, changed my life. To understand why, though, it’s necessary to know that in the UK, there is (or at least was during the 1980s and 1990s) a profound ”them-ver...
