Fluorescent Visualization of Bond Breaking in Polymer Glasses

چکیده
Mechanofluorescent polymer probes were used to visualize stresses and bond scission in polystyrene polycarbonate. Sonication of with a molar mass 1.1 × 105 g·mol–1 solution resulted 30% activation after 1 h, while shorter showed lower percentages. Single-asperity sliding friction tests performed on mechanophore-containing polycarbonate films. Polystyrene clearly visible crack formation correlated pattern the force, penetration depth, fluorescent mechanophore. Significant mechanophore was observed for an applied normal load 100 mN, whereas polycarbonate, only occurred at higher than 400 mN. The different degrees correlate well toughness compared polystyrene.

Physical aging in polymer glasses.
Physical aging refers to structural relaxation of the glassy state toward the metastable equilibrium amorphous state, and it is accompanied by changes in almost all physical properties. These changes, which must be taken into account in the design, manufacture, and use of glassy polymer materials and devices, present a daunting challenge to theorists.
متن کاملUltrastable nanostructured polymer glasses.
Owing to the kinetic nature of the glass transition, the ability to significantly alter the properties of amorphous solids by the typical routes to the vitreous state is restricted. For instance, an order of magnitude change in the cooling rate merely modifies the value of the glass transition temperature (T(g)) by a few degrees. Here we show that matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE...

Systems of globally coupled logistic maps (GCLM) can display complex collective behaviour characterized by the formation of synchronous clusters. In the dynamical clustering regime, such systems possess a large number of coexisting attractors and might be viewed as dynamical glasses. Glass properties of GCLM in the thermodynamical limit of large system sizes N are investigated. Replicas, repres...
متن کاملDirect visualization of ageing in colloidal glasses
We use confocal microscopy to directly visualize the dynamics of ageing colloidal glasses. We prepare a colloidal suspension at high density, a simple model system that shares many properties with other glasses, and initiate experiments by stirring the sample. We follow the motion of several thousand colloidal particles after the stirring and observe that their motion significantly slows as the...
