Fluorescence and Phosphorescence Spectroscopies and Their Applications in Gem Characterization

Fluorescence and phosphorescence are listed as mineral optical–physical properties in classical gemology textbooks. The trace elements which exist gems, certain defects the crystal lattice, some luminous molecules contribute to luminescence phenomena gem materials, including fluorescence phosphorescence. A systematic study using an excitation-emission matrix (EEM) not only provides detailed information about emission excitation peaks, but also indicates presence of specific elements, lattice defects, or substances materials. This reliable evidence for characterization gems. In this review paper, we briefly summarize spectroscopy illustrate its applications materials our laboratory, diamonds, fluorite, jadeite jade, hauyne, amber. Meanwhile, project is process needs more samples from sources confirm described data.
