Use of the FDA nozzle model to illustrate validation techniques in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations
A "credible" computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model has the potential to provide a meaningful evaluation of safety in medical devices. One major challenge in establishing "model credibility" is to determine the required degree of similarity between the model and experimental results for the model to be considered sufficiently validated. This study proposes a "threshold-based" validation appro...
متن کاملComputational Fluid Dynamics Validation of a Single Central Nozzle Supersonic Retropropulsion Configuration
Supersonic retropropulsion provides an option that can potentially enhance drag characteristics of high mass entry, descent, and landing systems. Preliminary flow field and vehicle aerodynamic characteristics have been found in wind tunnel experiments; however, these only cover specific vehicle configurations and freestream conditions. In order to generate useful aerodynamic data that can be us...
متن کاملApplication of Computational Fluid Dynamics to Optimisation of Membrane Module Configurations in Submerged Membrane Bioreactors
A three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics model, coupled with sludge rheology models to account for the behaviour of mixed liquor and porous media models to represent the resistance of membranes to the fluid field, was developed and used in estimating shear stress in the filtration zone of membrane bioreactors. The influence of a suite of factors on shear stress including aerator positio...
متن کاملAnalytical and Experimental Evaluation of Aerodynamic Thrust Vectoring on an Aerospike Nozzle
Results from numerical and coldow experimental investigations of aerodynamic thrust vectoring on a small-scale aerospike thruster are presented. Thrust vectoring was created by the injection of a secondary uid into the primary ow eld normal to the nozzle axis. The experimental aerospike nozzle was truncated at 57% of its full theoretical length. Data derived from coldow thrust vectoring tests w...
متن کاملSelected Performance Measurements of the F-15 Active Axisymmetric Thrust-vectoring Nozzle
Flight tests recently completed at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center evaluated performance of a hydromechanically vectored axisymmetric nozzle onboard the F-15 ACTIVE. A flight-test technique whereby strain gages installed onto engine mounts provided for the direct measurement of thrust and vector forces has proven to be extremely valuable. Flow turning and thrust efficiency, as well as no...
