Fluctuation, Dissipation and the Arrow of Time
The recent development of the theory of fluctuation relations has led to new insights into the ever-lasting question of how irreversible behavior emerges from time-reversal symmetric microscopic dynamics. We provide an introduction to fluctuation relations, examine their relation to dissipation and discuss their impact on the arrow of time question.
متن کاملFluctuation-dissipation relation for stochastic dynamics without detailed balance.
We show that the fluctuation-dissipation relation can be established for a class of stochastic dynamics that lack detailed balance. This class comprises lattice spin models whose time evolution is governed by a master equation with a one-spin-flip transition rate having the up-down symmetry. The relation is obtained by the introduction of a multiplicative perturbation of the transition rate, wh...
متن کاملQuantum fluctuation-dissipation theorem: a time domain formulation
A time-domain formulation of the equilibrium quantum fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) in the whole range of temperatures is presented. In the classical limit, the FDT establishes a proportionality relation between the dissipative part of the linear response function and the derivative of the corresponding equilibrium correlation function. At zero temperature, the FDT takes the form of Hilb...
متن کاملFluctuation and dissipation
We review the transient version of the work and fluctuation theorem. We verify the theorem explicitly by a microscopically exact analytic calculation of the probability distribution for work or entropy production in three physical examples: the Joule experiment, the compression/expansion of a gas and the process of effusion. متن کاملThe fluctuation-dissipation theorem
The linear response theory has given a general proof of the fluctuationdissipation theorem which states that the linear response of a given system to an external perturbation is expressed in terms of fluctuation properties of the system in thermal equilibrium. This theorem may be represented by a stochastic equation describing the fluctuation, which is a generalization of the familiar Langevin ...
