Flow Resistance in Lowland Rivers Impacted by Distributed Aquatic Vegetation

چکیده

This study addressed a research concern that employing fixed value for the bed roughness coefficient in lowland rivers (mostly sand-bed rivers) is deemed practically questionable presence of mobile and time-dependent changes vegetation patches. Accordingly, we set up 45 cross-sections four streams to investigate seasonal flow resistance values within year. The results revealed significant sources boundary with lower regime were forms aquatic vegetation. then used discharge as an influential variable reflecting impacts above-mentioned flow. studied approach ended two new predictors which simply connected dimensionless unit factors, Darcy-Weisbach (f) Manning (n) coefficients. A comparison computed measured also indicated 87–89% data sets ± 20% error bands. verified against large independent field flume data. obtained predictions using developed might overestimate factors by 40% other rivers. Based on different view, according findings this research, variation abundance could show augmentation values, both f n, low summer flows when covers river side banks. highest amount was observed during period, July–August period.

Flow and Transport in Regions with Aquatic Vegetation

1 This paper describes mean and turbulent flow and mass transport in the presence of aquatic 2 vegetation. Within emergent canopies, the turbulent length-scales are set by the stem diameter and 3 spacing, and the mean flow is determined by the distribution of canopy frontal area. Sparse 4 submerged canopies enhance bed roughness and near-bed turbulence, but the velocity profile 5 remains logari...

Determination of flow resistance caused by non-submerged woody vegetation

This paper investigates the determination of flow resistance caused by stiff and flexible woody vegetation. A new procedure has been developed which allows the determination of friction factor f or Manning’s n using measurable characteristics of vegetation and flow. The procedure is capable of predicting flow resistance due to: (1) leafless bushes or trees and (2) leafy bushes or trees. The app...

Flow-induced reconfiguration of buoyant and flexible aquatic vegetation

Plant posture can play a key role in the health of aquatic vegetation, by setting drag, controlling light availability, and mediating the exchange of nutrients and oxygen. We study the flow-induced reconfiguration of buoyant, flexible aquatic vegetation through a combination of laboratory flume experiments and theoretical modeling. The laboratory experiments measure drag and posture for model b...

Bottom-up controls on bacterial production in tropical lowland rivers

The importance of organic carbon and inorganic nutrients in controlling bacterial production was investigated in two tropical lowland rivers draining undisturbed forested catchments. Glucose (C), ammonium (N), phosphate (P), leaf leachate, and algal leachate were added alone or combined to water collected from one clear-water (Cataniapo) and one black-water (Autana) river of the Middle Orinoco ...
