Flow instability and momentum exchange in separation control by a synthetic jet

This study investigates a mechanism for controlling separated flows around an airfoil using synthetic jet (SJ). A large-eddy simulation (LES) was performed leading-edge separation flow at the chord Reynolds number of 63 000 and angle attack 12°. The present LES resolves turbulent structure inside deforming SJ cavity with grid. An optimal actuation-frequency band is identified between normalized frequencies F+=6.0 20, which suppresses drastically improves lift-to-drag ratio. In controlled flows, laminar bubble near leading edge periodically releases multiple spanwise-uniform vortex structures, diffuse merge to generate single coherent in period F+. Such plays significant role exchanging chordwise momentum near-wall surface freestream away from wall. It also entrains smaller vortices eventually enhances component stress throughout suction surface. Linear stability theory (LST) subsequently compared result, clarifies applicability LST flows. F+ regime, both linear nonlinear modes are excited well-balanced manner, where first mode associated Kelvin–Helmholtz instability contributes quick smooth transition, while second shows frequency lower than that encourages formation vortices.
