Floral enhancement of turfgrass lawns benefits wild bees and honey bees (Apis mellifera)

چکیده
Abstract The turfgrass lawn is a common feature of urban and suburban communities, often accounting for the largest green spaces by area in these landscapes. Flowering species within lawns have potential to serve as source forage bee pollinators areas. We intentionally introduced low-growing flowers promote diversity reduce inputs, while maintaining traditional aesthetics recreational uses associated with lawns. compared communities on naturally-occurring blooms Trifolium repens florally-enhanced that contained Prunella vulgaris ssp. lanceolata Thymus serpyllum addition T. . provided both wild Apis mellifera , A. being most 56 bees observed found supported more diverse than just Furthermore, were significantly different from containing based presence-absence data (Jaccard’s dissimilarity index). Our research indicates colonies can be allowing bloom lawns, land managers support introducing

Immune pathways and defence mechanisms in honey bees Apis mellifera
Social insects are able to mount both group-level and individual defences against pathogens. Here we focus on individual defences, by presenting a genome-wide analysis of immunity in a social insect, the honey bee Apis mellifera. We present honey bee models for each of four signalling pathways associated with immunity, identifying plausible orthologues for nearly all predicted pathway members. ...

متن کاملThe foraging behaviour of honey bees, Apis mellifera: a review
Foraging behaviour is one of the distinctive behaviours of honey bees, Apis mellifera. This behaviour is the link between the honey bee colony and the ambient environment. Therefore, various in-colony and out-colony factors have an impact on this behaviour, and many studies have been employed to investigate these factors. Foraging behaviour is not advantageous only for the colony and for plant ...
متن کاملAcaricide, Fungicide and Drug Interactions in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera)
BACKGROUND Chemical analysis shows that honey bees (Apis mellifera) and hive products contain many pesticides derived from various sources. The most abundant pesticides are acaricides applied by beekeepers to control Varroa destructor. Beekeepers also apply antimicrobial drugs to control bacterial and microsporidial diseases. Fungicides may enter the hive when applied to nearby flowering crops....
متن کاملThermoregulation of water collecting honey bees (Apis mellifera).
Honey bees (Apis mellifera carnica, Apidae, Hymenoptera) visited a pond in order to collect water. During their stays at the pond the body surface temperature of water foragers was measured using contactless thermography. Irrespective of the ambient temperature (T(A)) which ranged from 13.6 to 27.2 degrees C, the water carriers reached thoracic temperatures of 36-38.8 degrees C (mean values of ...
