Flexural strike-slip basins

چکیده
Abstract Strike-slip faults are classically associated with pull-apart basins where continental crust is thinned between two laterally offset fault segments. We propose a subsidence mechanism to explain the formation of new type basin no substantial segment or syn-strike-slip thinning observed. Such “flexural strike-slip basins” form due sediment load creating accommodation space by bending lithosphere. use two-way coupling geodynamic code ASPECT and surface-processes FastScape show that flexural emerge if deposited on thin lithosphere close fault. These conditions were met at Andaman Basin Central (Andaman Sea, Indian Ocean), seismic reflection data provide evidence extensive depocenter located parallel trace.

Multicycle dynamics of nonplanar strike-slip faults
[1] We perform two-dimensional dynamic models of strike-slip faults with a change in strike (a bend) over multiple earthquake cycles to examine the long-term effects of nonplanar fault geometry. A viscoelastic model (a proxy for off-fault deformation and tectonic loading) is introduced for the interseismic process to avoid pathological stress buildup around the bend. A finite element method wit...
متن کاملMagma storage in a strike-slip caldera
Silicic calderas form during explosive volcanic eruptions when magma withdrawal triggers collapse along bounding faults. The nature of specific interactions between magmatism and tectonism in caldera-forming systems is, however, unclear. Regional stress patterns may control the location and geometry of magma reservoirs, which in turn may control the spatial and temporal development of faults. H...
متن کامل3D stochastic rock fracture modeling related to strike-slip faults
Fault zones and fault-related fracture systems control the mechanical behaviors and fluid-flow properties of the Earth’s crust. Furthermore, nowadays, modeling is being increasingly used in order to understand the behavior of rock masses, and to determine their characteristics. In this work, fault zones and fracture patterns are reviewed, and also comprehensive studies are carried out on the fr...

متن کاملScaling of Fault Parameters for Continental Strike-Slip Earthquakes
The long-standing conflict between the predictions of elastic dislocation models and the observation that average coseismic slip increases with rupture length is resolved with application of a simple displacement-depth function and the assumption that the base of the seismogenic zone does not result from the onset of viscous relaxation but rather a transition to stable sliding in a medium that ...
