Flexural properties and failure mechanisms of infusible thermoplastic- and thermosetting based composite materials for marine applications

This study aims to evaluate the flexural properties and associated failure mechanisms of a reactive thermoplastic relative traditional thermosetting resin systems (polyester, vinylester, epoxy) for potential application in marine vessels over 50 m length, as part H2020 FIBRESHIP project. All are compatible with vacuum assisted liquid infusion manufacturing technique commonly used small/medium size shipyards. Glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates were manufactured, test samples extracted, immersed deionised water or an organic (diesel) mechanically tested strength modulus. Failure analysed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). In terms strength, based laminate performed similar epoxy retained both diesel. The governing mode buckling kink band formation coupled interlaminar cracking was identified thermoplastic. vinylester equivalent all three environments while polyester showed greatest reduction due extensive cracking. Overall, shown be competitive candidate structures. modes dry, wet diesel condition modulus negligible less than 10%
