FlEC: Enhancing QUIC With Application-Tailored Reliability Mechanisms

Packet losses are common events in today’s networks. They usually result longer delivery times for application data since retransmissions the de facto technique to recover from such losses. Retransmissions is a good strategy many applications but it may lead poor performance with latency-sensitive compared network coding. Although different types of coding techniques have been proposed reduce impact by transmitting redundant information, they not widely used. Some niche include their own variant Forward Erasure Correction (FEC) techniques, there no generic protocol that enables easily use them. We close this gap designing, implementing and evaluating new Flexible (FlEC) framework inside newly standardized QUIC protocol. With FlEC, an can select reliability mechanism meets its requirements, pure various forms FEC. consider three cases: $(i)$ bulk transfer, notation="LaTeX">$(ii)$ file transfers restricted buffers notation="LaTeX">$(iii)$ delay-constrained messages. demonstrate modern transport protocols as benefit knowledge leveraging FlEC provide better loss recovery stream scheduling. Our evaluation over wide range scenarios shows outperforms standard mechanisms latency viewpoint.
