Fitness effects of somatic mutations accumulating during vegetative growth

چکیده
Abstract The unique life form of plants promotes the accumulation somatic mutations that can be passed to offspring in next generation, because same meristem cells responsible for vegetative growth also generate gametes sexual reproduction. However, little is known about consequences mutation fitness. We evaluate fitness effects Mimulus guttatus by comparing progeny from self-pollinations made within flower (autogamy) between stems on plant (geitonogamy). are evident this comparison, as autogamy leads homozygosity a proportion mutations, but geitonogamy remain heterozygous each stem. In two different experiments, we find consistent individual stems. Surprisingly, several groups autogamous crosses displayed increases compared crosses, likely indicating beneficial occurred some These results support hypothesis accumulate during growth, they filtered forms selection occur throughout development, resulting culling expressed deleterious and retention mutations.

Markov Models for Accumulating Mutations
We introduce and analyze a waiting time model for the accumulation of genetic changes. The continuous time conjunctive Bayesian network is defined by a partially ordered set of mutations and by the rate of fixation of each mutation. The partial order encodes constraints on the order in which mutations can fixate in the population, shedding light on the mutational pathways underlying the evoluti...

متن کاملGenotype-environment interactions of spontaneous mutations for vegetative fitness in the human pathogenic fungus Cryptococcus neoformans.
Spontaneous mutation is the ultimate source of all genetic variation. By interacting with environmental factors, genetic variation determines the phenotype and fitness of individuals in natural populations. However, except in a few model organisms, relatively little is known about the patterns of genotype-environment interactions of spontaneous mutations. Here I examine the rates of spontaneous...
متن کاملSomatic mutations of epidermal growth factor receptor in colorectal carcinoma.
PURPOSE Somatic mutations of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene may predict the sensitivity of non-small cell lung carcinoma to gefitinib. However, no mutations have been reported for colorectal carcinoma. We therefore analyzed EGFR mutations in colorectal adenocarcinomas by the combined use of laser microdissection and sequencing of genomic DNA. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We examined ...
متن کاملExpression of divIB of Bacillus subtilis during vegetative growth.
Expression of the division initiation gene, divIB, of Bacillus subtilis vegetative growth was examined. lacZ fusion studies and transcription start point mapping have established that a sigma A promoter proximal to divIB is utilized in vivo. The -10 region of this promoter, which is located 93 bp upstream of the start codon, has been defined precisely by site-directed mutagenesis that destroys ...
