Fishing Effort and Associated Catch per Unit Effort for Small-Scale Fisheries in the Mozambique Channel Region: 1950–2016

چکیده
The Mozambique Channel region in East Africa has diverse marine ecosystems and serves as a migratory corridor for economically important species. Local foreign industrial fisheries operate the Channel, but regional small-scale are crucially that provide food security, livelihoods, economic opportunities rural coastal communities. This study reconstructed investigated trends fishing effort catch per unit (CPUE) of four Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) constitute i.e., Union Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, Mozambique, from 1950 to 2016. Effective form capacity kWdays (i.e., kilowatt days) was derived using number, length, motorization (engine power) by vessels, well an approximate human-powered equivalent shore-based fishers without days year. increased nearly 60 times just over 386,000 23 million Correspondingly, overall CPUE, based on previously independently data declined 91% whole, under 175 kg?kWday –1 early 1950s 15 recent years. All EEZs showed strongest declines CPUE earlier decades, driven growth vessel numbers impacting effective effort. Increased combined with substantial were drivers increasing decreasing clearly suggest continuing increase absence restrictive management actions may exacerbate overexploitation risk.

Study on length frequency and catch per unit effort of sturgeon spawners in the fishing grounds of Mazandaran province
In this study, the catch composition and the catch per unit effort (CPUE) of sturgeon spawners caught by the gill net were investigated in the fishing grounds of Mazandaran province in two regions 3 and. Sampling and data collection of sturgeon spawning fish was done seasonally from 7 fishing grounds using gill nets with a mesh size of 150 mm. The results of the Chi-square test showed that the...
متن کاملSpecies diversity and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of Gobiidae in Salmanshahr, coastal area of the southern Caspian Sea
The gobies are non-commercial fishes in the Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea for which population dynamics and stock status are poorly known. In this survey, we tried to define species diversity and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of Gobiidae by using beach seine nets in Salmanshahr, the southern Caspian Sea. From March 2011 to April 2012, 224 specimens representing 4 gobiid species, belonging to...
متن کاملCatch-per-unit-effort: which estimator is best?
In this paper we examine the accuracy and precision of three indices of catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE). We carried out simulations, generating catch data according to six probability distributions (normal, Poisson, lognormal, gamma, delta and negative binomial), three variance structures (constant, proportional to effort and proportional to the squared effort) and their magnitudes (tail weight). ...

متن کاملCombining participatory and socioeconomic approaches to map fishing effort in small-scale fisheries
Mapping the spatial allocation of fishing effort while including key stakeholders in the decision making process is essential for effective fisheries management but is difficult to implement in complex small-scale fisheries that are diffuse, informal and multifaceted. Here we present a standardized but flexible approach that combines participatory mapping approaches (fishers' spatial preference...
