چکیده

The diversity of popular names used in fish nomenclature off the Brazilian coast makes it difficult to identify species, and many have their origins Indigenous languages, mainly Tupi-Guarani. This study sought understand update list most assess some ethnotaxonomic patterns employed by artisanal fishers from Amazon Coast naming elasmobranchs. Interviews with 314 fishermen 17 coastal municipalities were carried out employing a semi-structured form, banners, photographic records local elasmobranch addressing characteristics applied species identification. Stranding Events of Kogia Whales along the Brazilian Coast

The genus Kogia, which comprises only two extant species, Kogia sima and Kogia breviceps, represents one of the least known groups of cetaceans in the global ocean. In some coastal regions, however, stranding events of these species have been relatively common over the last decades. Stranding provides the opportunity to investigate the biology of these cetaceans and to explore the epidemiologic...

Population genetic structure, introgression, and hybridization in the genus Rhizophora along the Brazilian coast

Mangrove plants comprise plants with similar ecological features that have enabled them to adapt to life between the sea and the land. Within a geographic region, different mangrove species share not only similar adaptations but also similar genetic structure patterns. Along the eastern coast of South America, there is a subdivision between the populations north and south of the continent's nor...

Segmental hair mercury evaluation of a single family along the upper Madeira basin, Brazilian Amazon.

Mercury pollution (MeHg) up the aquatic food chains in the Amazonian ecosystems has been a major concern in environmental health. Riverside people (ribeirinhos) along the Upper Madeira river are heavy fish eaters. Hair is the best biomarker for MeHg exposure. By assuming a constant hair growth rate, it is possible to evaluate a temporal profile of Hg exposure over the recent defined past. In th...

Occurrence of Magellanic Penguins along the Northeast Brazilian Coast during 2008 Austral Winter

During the austral winter of 2008, thousands of penguins traveled to low latitudes along the South Atlantic coast of South America. The atmospheric and oceanic conditions from April to July 2008 may account for the penguins' unusual geographic distribution. During that period, South Atlantic coastal waters were cooler; the wind anomalies had northward and onshore components; the ocean's coastal...
