First-season growth and food of YOY pike (Esox lucius) are habitat specific within a lake

چکیده

Piscivorous fish are important predators in aquatic systems and as such they can have far-reaching effects on ecosystem composition function. These depend piscivore predation rates behaviour, recruitment of young-of-the-year into piscivory hereby govern properties. Growth differ between water bodies due to e.g. general productivity, but information variation juvenile growth body condition habitats within is scant. We here evaluate growth, condition, food occurrence stomach contents an piscivore, pike (Esox lucius), over the first season two contrasting spatially separated homogenous habitat types (emergent submerged vegetation by 50 m open sand) same lake. Individual size were higher early season, whereas end their summer larger emergent vegetation, spite zooplankton, macroinvertebrates prey being overall vegetation. Pike showed habitat-specific patterns macroinvertebrate consumption (higher vegetation) date-specific zooplankton season), (lower late season) later that not a result types, did match. conclude hatched towards and, hence, these should survival probability possibly contribute more population density at older ages, also provides alternative added environment for shallow lake ecosystems.

Genetic structure of pike (Esox lucius) reveals a complex and previously unrecognized colonization history of Ireland

AIM We investigated genetic variation of Irish pike populations and their relationship with European outgroups, in order to elucidate the origin of this species to the island, which is largely assumed to have occurred as a human-mediated introduction over the past few hundred years. We aimed thereby to provide new insights into population structure to improve fisheries and biodiversity manageme...

Mercury Concentration in Muscle and Liver of Pike (Esox lucius) Collected from Anzali International Wetland, Iran

Background: Mercury (Hg) is a major environmental contaminant due to its global ubiquity, tendency to bioaccumulate, and toxicity in wildlife. Mercury accumulation in wetlands threatens critical breeding and foraging habitats of many fish and wildlife species. In this study, mercury concentrations were detected in different tissues of pike. Methods: To achieve these purposes, 58 pikes (Esox l...

Impact of pulp and paper mill effluent on egg hatchability of pike (Esox lucius L.).

Toxicants affect reproduction often at concentrations well below lethal levels. Also, the acidification of fresh waters has been shown to cause extinction of teleost fish populations usually through a failure of recruitment from younger generations. Both field and laboratory studies have documented that the greatest susceptibility to low pH occurs in the early developmental stages (e.g. Lee et ...

responses to ultraviolet radiation in larval pike , Esox lucius , of two origins and ages

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced mortality and behavioural disorder were studied in larval northern pike of two origins and ages. Newly hatched larvae of two differently coloured populations and six-day-old larvae of one population were exposed to four fluence rates of UVR, resulting in total doses from 11.5 to 63 kJ m–2, and monitored for mortality and behaviour. The rate of mortality and t...

Immunological and Ultrastructural Characterization of True Histiocytic Lymphoma in the Northern Pike, Esox lucius L.1

An epidemic of a malignant neoplasm occurs in northern pike, /„vo.v lucius L., from the Aland Islands of Finland. The neoplasm is morpho logically similar to other pike hernie tumors reported in other areas of the world. Pike normal tissues showed evolutionary conservation with the mammalian intermediate filament proteins cytokeratin, desinili, vimentin, neurofilament protein, and glial fibri...
