چکیده
Compared to aquatic ecosystems, limited information exists on organochlorine accumulation in terrestrial and this is specifically true for carnivores that have received attention terms of studies pollutant bioaccumulation. The African Leopard, Panthera pardus (Linnaeus, 1758), a popular focal species research by ethologists ecologists, but noticeable knowledge gap with regards toxicological aspects. To address gap, the aim study was determine baseline pesticide (OCP) concentrations blood live wild captive leopards South Africa, explore relationship between OCP levels different conservation management strategies. Peripheral samples seven leopards, representing regular melanistic individuals within population, were collected while under sedation. Σ serum detected means GC-ECD. Statistical relationships among content from three geographical areas, sexes, age groups status examined. Captive had slightly higher mean concentration (901 pg/ml) than (768 pg/ml), females lower OCPs (797 males (1,058 pg/ml). accumulated following order DDTs (27%) > HCHs (21%) Heptachlors (15%) CHLs Drins (14%) HCB (8%). Differences composition profiles resampled also found. sources can be attributed historic current use of, e.g., DDT HCHs, malaria vector control insecticides/avicides Africa. For main source possibly contaminated chicken formed major portion their diet. This first report Africa highlights need parameter considered healthy populations.

Diversity and evolutionary patterns of immune genes in free-ranging Namibian leopards (Panthera pardus pardus).
The genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are a key component of the mammalian immune system and have become important molecular markers for fitness-related genetic variation in wildlife populations. Currently, no information about the MHC sequence variation and constitution in African leopards exists. In this study, we isolated and characterized genetic variation at the adaptivel...
متن کاملPanthera pardus (Carnivora: Felidae)
Panthera pardus (leopard; Linnaeus, 1758) is the smallest of the 4 large felids in the genus Panthera. A solitary and adaptable species, P. pardus is the widest ranging of all wild felids, inhabiting rain forests, mountains, semiarid environments, and suburban areas throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia to the Russian Far East. Despite this distribution, P. pardus is li...
متن کاملWho Bites the Bullet First? The Susceptibility of Leopards Panthera pardus to Trophy Hunting
Reliable data is fundamentally important for managing large carnivore populations, and vital for informing hunting quota levels if those populations are subject to trophy hunting. Camera-trapping and spoor counts can provide reliable population estimates for many carnivores, but governments typically lack the resources to implement such surveys over the spatial scales required to inform robust ...
متن کاملThe current distribution and status of leopards Panthera pardus in China
The leopard Panthera pardus, categorized globally as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, has the widest distribution of any wild felid species, although in Asia it has declined dramatically and five subspecies are Endangered or Critically Endangered. In China at least three subspecies have been reported to occur throughout much of the country, and in the population was estimated to be ,...
متن کاملMapping black panthers: Macroecological modeling of melanism in leopards (Panthera pardus)
The geographic distribution and habitat association of most mammalian polymorphic phenotypes are still poorly known, hampering assessments of their adaptive significance. Even in the case of the black panther, an iconic melanistic variant of the leopard (Panthera pardus), no map exists describing its distribution. We constructed a large database of verified records sampled across the species' r...
