Fire Plume in a Sharply Stratified Ambient Fluid

چکیده

The present work analyses theoretically and numerically fire plumes evolving in a two-layer stratified environment. ambient fluid consists of lower cold (heavy) layer an upper warm (light) with sharp interface. plume is controlled by the heat release rate Q. Depending on density interface location, temperatures layers source conditions, can rise indefinitely or be captured stratification. To determine criterion between these two situations, theoretical model proposed. With this model, it found that trapping/escaping determined terms stratification parameter $$\varLambda > 0.88$$ . This $$\varLambda$$ function release, location also allows height to analytically. comparison numerical data shows excellent agreement. Finally, for practical purposes, we propose simplified correlation estimate trapped as height, rate.

Spontaneous generation of a swirling plume in a stratified ambient

The transition from laminar to complex spatio-temporal dynamics of plumes due to a localized buoyancy source is studied numerically. Several experiments have reported that this transition is sensitive to external perturbations. Therefore, a well-controlled set-up has been chosen for our numerical study, consisting of a localized heat source at the bottom of an enclosed cylinder whose sidewall i...

Plume outflow intrusion impact on acoustical signal fluctuations in a pre-stratified environment

Existence of outflow intrusion introduces small-scale turbulence that perturbs the vertically stratified character of the sound velocity and causes spatial and temporal fluctuations of the sound propagation. In this experimental study, we have investigated acoustic wave propagation with frequency of 50 kHz in a pre-stratified environment with intrusion of a turbulent plume while the si...

Convection from a line-source into a two-layer stratified ambient fluid

We experimentally investigate the behaviour of a line-source plume falling through a finite two-layer stratified ambient where the depth of the upper ambient layer increases in time. Laboratory observations suggest one of two possible flow regimes depending on the value of λ, which represents the relative loss of buoyancy experienced by the plume upon crossing the ambient interface. When λ > 1,...

Generation of internal waves by a supercritical stratified plume

[1] The generation of internal waves by a propagating river plume is studied in the framework of a fully nonlinear nonhydrostatic numerical model. The vertical fluid stratification, parameters of tide, river discharge, and the bottom topography were taken close to those observed near the Columbia River mouth. It was found that in the beginning of the ebb tidal phase the river water intruding in...

Turbulent mixing in a stratified fluid

The strength of diapycnal mixing by small-scale motions in a stratified fluid is investigated through changes to the mean buoyancy profile. We study the mixing in laboratory experiments in which an initially linearly stratified fluid is stirred with a rake of vertical bars. The flow evolution Ž . depends on the Richardson number Ri , defined as the ratio of buoyancy forces to inertial forces. A...
