Finite element analysis of wind turbine blades subjected to torsional loads: Shell vs solid elements

چکیده
In this work the modelling of wind turbine blades subjected to torsional loads is explored. Usually, are modelled using Outer Mold Layer (OML) shell models, whose mid-surface does not coincide with nodal plane, and have been shown capture their behaviour correctly in loadings, highly underestimating stiffness blade. To better understand differences between OML models solid element a cylinder tube first analysed conclusions from study applied for models. It was observed that artificial deformation modes were responsible erroneous results when offset elements. These can be drastically improved by controlling associated drilling Degree Of Freedom (DOF). Furthermore, high fidelity definition geometry blade crucial accurately its torsion. By carefully these parameters, difference reduced 35% 5%.

Finite element analysis of the cross-section of wind turbine blades; a comparison between shell and 2D-solid models
A very detailed 2D-solid finite element model is developed representing the load carrying box girder of a wind turbine blade. Using typical geometrical values for the girder dimensions and public available material data, the overall cross-sectional behaviour is analysed for a simple compressive line load. The results are compared with result from similar shell models, which typically are used f...
متن کاملFinite Element Analysis of Buckling of Thin Cylindrical Shell Subjected to Uniform External Pressure
One of the common failure modes of thin cylindrical shell subjected external pressure is buckling. The buckling pressure of these shell structures are dominantly affected by the geometrical imperfections present in the cylindrical shell which are very difficult to alleviate during manufacturing process. In this work, only three types of geometrical imperfection patterns are considered namely (a...
متن کاملModal Testing and Finite Element Analysis of Crack Effects on Turbine Blades
The study of vibration response of a turbine blade helps to detect the crack presence in the blade which alters its dynamic characteristics. The change is characterized by changes in the modal parameters associated with natural frequencies. In this paper, study of vibration response is made for turbine blade in the presence of a crack like defect. Turbine blade is initially assumed as a cantile...
متن کاملMode Analysis of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Blades
This paper presents a recently developed the finite model method for analysis of horizontal axis wind turbine blades. Free vibration equation is proposed based on theory of the classical lamination and Lagrange method. A 40 m rotor blade was chosen as a example study to validate the static and dynamic behaviour predicted by shell model built in ANSYS,Given uncertainty of material properties inv...
متن کاملAnalysis of Tall Buildings with Bundled Tube System Subjected to Wind and Earthquake loads
At present, the tubular structural systems are mainly used in tall buildings to withstand earthquake loads. Although it is possible to analyse the structure by finite element methods using standard three dimensional programs, the system is generally time-consuming and expensive in the primary design work. In this paper, for the analysis of Framed-Tube systems, a simple method was studied and de...
