Finite element analyses of FRP-strengthened concrete beams with corroded reinforcement

Existing deteriorated reinforced concrete (RC) structures need strengthening to extend service life. Fibre polymer (FRP) has been widely used strengthen sound structures, but its application on damaged still needs be investigated. This paper presents non-linear finite element analyses conducted assess the flexural behaviour of corrosion-damaged RC beams strengthened with externally bonded FRP. Beams in four different categories were analysed: a reference beam, corroded non-strengthened and glass FRP (GFRP) carbon (CFRP) respectively. Furthermore, modelled modelling choices investigate effectiveness applied beam soffit as U-jackets. Pre-loading corrosion-induced cracks incorporated by reducing tensile strength elements at crack locations. Average pitting corrosion cross-sectional area reinforcement corresponding measured levels. Interface simulate bond between concrete. The methods validated against experimental results. It was found that corrosion, especially location pits, lengths number pits considered, influential predicting load deformation capacity beams. A CFRP plate soffit, combined inclined U-jackets ends provided sufficient strengthening. Thus, intermediate did not further increase load-bearing for studied geometry damages. However, GFRP sheet both needed provide full utilisation geometry. In studies methods, it is recommended varying dimensions, patterns levels, spacing dimensions.
