Fine‐scale oceanographic drivers of reef manta ray ( <i>Mobula alfredi</i> ) visitation patterns at a feeding aggregation site

چکیده

Globally, reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) are in decline and particularly vulnerable to exploitation disturbance at aggregation sites. Here, passive acoustic telemetry a suite of advanced oceanographic technologies were used for the first time investigate fine-scale (5-min) influence drivers on visitation patterns 19 tagged M. alfredi feeding site Egmont Atoll Chagos Archipelago. Boosted regression trees indicate that tag detection probability increased with intrusion cold-water bores propagating up atoll slope through narrow lagoon inlet during flood tide, potentially transporting zooplankton from thermocline. Tag also warmer near-surface temperature close low currents flowing offshore, high levels backscatter (a proxy biomass). These combinations processes support proposition carried thermocline into may be pumped back out an ebb tide. conditions provide temporally limited opportunities alfredi, which tied tides. Results some evidence presence Langmuir Circulation, transports concentrates zooplankton, partly explain why occasionally remained location longer than two hours. Identification these correlations provides unique insight dynamic synthesis likely foraging ecology Atoll, elsewhere throughout their range.

Effects of yearling, juvenile and adult survival on reef manta ray (Manta alfredi) demography

BACKGROUND The trade in manta ray gill plates has considerably increased over the last two decades. The resulting increases in ray mortality, in addition to mortality caused by by-catch, has caused many ray populations to decrease in size. The aim of this study was to ascertain how yearling and juvenile growth and survival, and adult survival and reproduction affect reef manta ray (Manta alfred...

Conservation of reef manta rays (Manta alfredi) in a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Large-scale island development or sustainable tourism?

A large reef manta ray (Manta alfredi) aggregation has been observed off the north Sudanese Red Sea coast since the 1950s. Sightings have been predominantly within the boundaries of a marine protected area (MPA), which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016. Contrasting economic development trajectories have been proposed for the area (small-scale ecotourism and large-scale is...

When Giants Turn Up: Sighting Trends, Environmental Influences and Habitat Use of the Manta Ray Manta alfredi at a Coral Reef

Manta rays Manta alfredi are present all year round at Lady Elliot Island (LEI) in the southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia, with peaks in abundance during autumn and winter. Drivers influencing these fluctuations in abundance of M. alfredi at the site remain uncertain. Based on daily count, behavioural, weather and oceanographic data collected over a three-year period, this study examined th...

Environmental Influences on Patterns of Vertical Movement and Site Fidelity of Grey Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) at Aggregation Sites

We used acoustic telemetry to describe the patterns of vertical movement, site fidelity and residency of grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) on the outer slope of coral reefs in Palau, Micronesia, over a period of two years and nine months. We tagged 39 sharks (mostly adult females) of which 31 were detected regularly throughout the study. Sharks displayed strong inter-annual residenc...
