Findings Associated With a Novel Program Designed to Support Indigenous Faculty Members of U.S. Health Professions Schools

 Purpose: Recent studies on programs designed to support Indigenous faculty are lacking. Expanding numbers of successful health could help improve delivery culturally appropriate/responsive care for people. Methods: We enrolled nine American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) participants in 2017 and 53 2018 an Faculty Forum (IFF). provided instruction academic advancement, addressed unique cultural considerations, fostered networking ongoing career AIAN faculty. used a post-session survey, including the 22-item Diversity Engagement Survey (DES) focus groups, assess initial reactions program follow-up survey change at 1 year. Findings: Participants both IFF sessions were predominantly female, most often aged 35–44 from primary disciplines. Two members rose higher rank during 1-year period. Findings DES illustrated that Common Purpose, Equitable Reward Recognition, Cultural Competence, Trust, Sense Belonging, Appreciation Individual Attributes increased slightly The greatest was Respect, which mean 3.42 (SD = 0.77) 3.76 0.67), p .05. Focus group findings revealed mentoring includes perspectives is lacking, as respect these community, though showed improved over time. Conclusions: More tailored work needed U.S. settings if they achieve success become role models others entering settings.
