Filling and drainage of a subglacial lake beneath the Flade Isblink ice cap, northeast Greenland

چکیده
Abstract. The generation, transport, storage and drainage of meltwater play important roles in the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) subglacial system. Active lakes, common features Antarctica, have recently been detected beneath GrIS may impact ice sheet hydrology. Despite their potential importance, few repeat lake filling events identified Greenland. Here we examine surface elevation change a collapse basin at Flade Isblink cap, northeast Greenland, which formed due to sudden 2011. We estimate volume evolution using multi-temporal ArcticDEM data ICESat-2 altimetry acquired between 2012 2021. Our long-term observations show that was continuously filled by meltwater, with rising up 55 m during 2012–2021, 138.2 × 106 m3 transported into 2017. A second rapid event occurred late August 2019, induced an abrupt dynamic response. find 2019 released much less water than 2011 conclude multiple factors, such as stored bedrock relief, regulate episodic lake. By comparing production change, only ∼ 64 % descended bed, suggesting processes refreezing firn aquifer storage, need be further quantified.

Subglacial lake drainage detected beneath the Greenland ice sheet
The contribution of the Greenland ice sheet to sea-level rise has accelerated in recent decades. Subglacial lake drainage events can induce an ice sheet dynamic response--a process that has been observed in Antarctica, but not yet in Greenland, where the presence of subglacial lakes has only recently been discovered. Here we investigate the water flow paths from a subglacial lake, which drained...
متن کاملConnected subglacial lake drainage beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica
We present conventional and swath altimetry data from Cryosat-2 revealing a system of subglacial lakes that drained between June 2013 and January 2014 under the central part of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica. Much of the 10 drainage happened in less than six months, with an apparent connection between three lakes spanning more than 130 km. Hydropotential analysis of the glacier bed shows a l...
متن کاملSubglacial floods beneath ice sheets.
Subglacial floods (jökulhlaups) are well documented as occurring beneath present day glaciers and ice caps. In addition, it is known that massive floods have occurred from ice-dammed lakes proximal to the Laurentide ice sheet during the last ice age, and it has been suggested that at least one such flood below the waning ice sheet was responsible for a dramatic cooling event some 8000 years ago...
متن کاملResponse of the large-scale subglacial drainage system of Northeast Greenland to surface elevation changes
The influence of subglacial water on the dynamics of ice flow has been the object of increasing interest in the past decade. In this study we focus on large-scale, longterm changes in surface elevation over Northeast Greenland and the corresponding changes in subglacial water routeways. Our results show that over timescales ranging from decades to millennia the area may experience redistributio...
