Field Resistance of American Sycamore ‘Davis’ to Canker Pathogens

چکیده
Abstract American sycamores ( Platanus occidentalis L.) are found in many ecosystems and planted urban landscapes worldwide. The trees highly susceptible to anthracnose canker pathogens, causing leaf blight branch dieback. On Ohio State University campus Columbus, Ohio, an sycamore was observed thrive among symptomatic sycamores. healthy tree, subsequently protected as cultivar ‘Davis,’ vegetatively propagated tested for field resistance natural infection of pathogens compared the wildtype. Incidence severity necrosis, incidence dieback, tree death were evaluated 2 consecutive seasons. necrosis disconnected from dieback mortality, little no leaves produced on wildtype trees. By end second season, 7 out 12 dead, while all ‘Davis’ alive. Several recovered both wildtype, including Apiognomonia platani Diaporthe eres . latter had not been previously reported sycamore. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that D. is indeed pathogenic also significantly more resistant than development should be preferred over landscape.

Maturation of Sweetgum and American Sycamore Seeds
Over three consecutive years in central Mississippi, sweetgum (Liquidambar styraci/lua L.) and sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.) fruits had nearly reached fullsize by late June. Sweetgum seeds were physiologically mature by mid-August, but dry weight increased until late September. As sweetgum seeds matured, the crude fat level rose to 27 percent of seed dry weight. During maturation, concent...

متن کاملGeographic Variation in Disease Susceptibility of American Sycamore
Leaf scorch, top dieback, and lethal bole cankers were found in two progeny tests of sycamore in Mississippi. Both tests indicated that southern seed sources are more disease resistant than northern seed sources and that some progenies within seed source have even greater resistance. Although eight organisms associated with one or more of the disease symptoms were identified, determination of t...
متن کاملResistance to Bacterial Pathogens in Plants
To successfully infect a plant, pathogens must overcome three layers of defense: (1) preformedphysical barriers; (2) a cell-surface-based surveillance system that detects conserved pathogenmolecules and (3) an intracellular surveillance system that detects effector proteins injected into host cells. Bacterial plant pathogens overcome the first layer either by invading through natural openings a...
متن کاملInfluence of Infection Court. Host Vigor. and Culture Filtrates on Canker Production by Botryodiplodia Theobromae Conidia in Sycamore
Some of the factors that influence canker development in American sycamores inoculated with Botryodiplodia theobromae conidia were determined. A combination of B. theobromae culture filtrates and conidia resulted in 100% canker production when Iiitroduced into stem wounds; however. a combination of Cephalosporium diospyri culture filtrates and B. theobromae conidia resulted in no canker product...
