FIELD MEASUREMENTS OF WAVE INTERACTIONS WITH A DIKE ON A SHALLOW FORESHORE USING AN “ARTIFICIAL DIKE” CONCEPT

نویسندگان

چکیده

Low-lying countries typically have mildly-sloping beaches as part of their coastal defence system. Many in north-western Europe urban areas that rely on this type system, which consists a lowcrested impermeable sea dike with relatively short promenade, and long (nourished) beach front acts very/extremely shallow foreshore defined by Hofland (2017). Along the cross-section hybrid beach-dike storm waves are forced to undergo many transformation processes before they finally overtop dike. These hydrodynamic include shoaling, swell wave energy transfer sub- superharmonics via nonlinear wavewave interactions, dissipation breaking bottom friction, reflection against dike, run-up overtopping bore impact wall or building, back towards interacting incoming bores promenade. Field measurements all these at same time very challenging but necessary since suffer from neither scale nor model effects. data therefore crucial evaluate design methodologies, physical numerical modelling. This paper presents field setup features innovative artificial unique world.

Virtual Dike: multiscale simulation of dike stability

We present a Virtual Dike simulation module developed as a part of a flood Early Warning System (EWS) for the UrbanFlood project. The UrbanFlood EWS is a distributed system that analyzes sensor data received in real-time from flood defenses (dikes, dams, etc.) and simulates dike stability, breaching and flood propagation. The aim of the Virtual Dike module is to develop an advanced multiscale m...

Does shallow dike intrusion and widening remain a possible mechanism for graben formation on Mars?

Shallow dike intrusion and widening was proposed several decades ago as a cause of surface faulting and graben formation on Earth. This hypothesis was subsequently applied to the spectacular linear and/or radial graben systems visible on Mars. However, a recent study has suggested that shallow dike intrusion on Mars results in contractional folding and uplift adjacent to dike walls rather than ...

Study of Bubble Size Distribution for Breaking Wave Propagates over a Submerged Dike

Breaking wave plays an important role in air-sea, wave-wave, wave-current, currentcurrent interaction. Wave breaking not only disturbs communication of sound chiefly because of the transient noise of the air-entrained bubbles. A useful analytical method, Gabor transformation, is applied due to its advantages over nonsymmetric and abrupt transition signals in breaking events. Numbers of bubbles ...

Statistical Evaluation of Historical Dike Failure Mechanism

Statistical evaluation of historical dike failure mechanism The failure mechanism of flood protection dikes includes physical (geotechnical, seepage) processes leading to a dike breach. An awareness of the failure mechanism is required directly in dike stability calculations and indirectly for risk calculations. Statistics of historical data indicate among others the distribution and frequency ...

Discrete Element Modeling of Dike-induced Deformation

Introduction: The Tharsis region of Mars is characterized by large volcanic and tectonic centers with distinct sets of graben systems. Many of the radially oriented grabens have been inferred to form in response to intrusion of magmatic dikes. This interpretation is based primarily upon early physical and numerical (boundary element) models that were developed originally to understand surface d...
