چکیده
Dengue is a fatal arthropod-borne disease that affects humans worldwide. The mosquito Aedes albopictus (Skuse) the secondary vector of dengue in Sri Lanka, however, studies on oviposition preferences Ae. scarce. objective current study was to investigate attraction selected household containers; black colour basins, metal cans, rain gutter parts, curd pots, coconut shells and yoghurt cups. For this, water containers for were placed three outdoor shady sites at different heights. larvae collected after 5 days. reared adult stage then they identified enumerated. Wing lengths female mosquitoes developed measured. In meantime, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) total solids (TDS) measured each container. larval density higher shells. maximum mean number observed ground level. increased with aging old preferred than new Highest TDS level neutral pH which support oviposition. highest wing representing fecundity. conclusion, discarded pots should be carefully managed as means eliminating breeding sites.

Evaluation of attractants and egg-laying substrate preference for oviposition by Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae).
Evaluation of oviposition attractants and substrate preferences of Aedes albopictus was carried out under laboratory and field conditions. To obtain candidate oviposition substances we used a water rinse of 3 mollusk species: blood cockle (Anadara granosa), carpet shell (Paphia undulata), and sea mussel (Mytilus smaragdinus), and the giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon). The rinse water of carpe...
متن کاملLaboratory and field evaluation of an oviposition trap for Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).
An ovitrap (BR-OVT) based on physical and chemical stimuli for attracting gravid Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) females was developed and evaluated under laboratory and field conditions. Attractants were assayed using alternative chamber bioassays prior to being used in the BR-OVT oviposition trap. A significant preference of gravid females for sites containing conspecific egg raft...
متن کاملLaboratory evaluation of 21 insect repellents as larvicides and as oviposition deterrents of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae).
Twenty-one commercial insect repellent products, including 12 botanical, 6 DEET-based, and 3 synthetic organics, were evaluated as larvicides and as oviposition deterrents of Aedes albopictus. Ten of the 12 botanical products at 0.1% concentration provided 57-100% mortality of laboratory-reared 4th-stage Ae. albopictus larvae at 24 h after treatment. Five of the 6 DEET-based products and 3 synt...
متن کاملEffectiveness of synthetic versus natural human volatiles as attractants for Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) sensu stricto.
Females of the African malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto, use human volatiles to find their blood-host. Previous work has shown that ammonia, lactic acid, and aliphatic carboxylic acids significantly affect host orientation and attraction of this species. In the current study, these compounds were tested for their attractiveness relative to human emanations in vivo and in vi...
متن کاملCalibration and evaluation of field cage for oviposition study with Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti female (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae).
Differences among results gathered from insect behavior studies conducted in laboratory and field situations are due to ambient variables that differ greatly between both environments. In laboratory studies the environmental conditions can be controlled whereas in field temperature, humidity and air velocity vary uncontrollably. The objective of this study was to calibrate and evaluate an exper...
