Fidelis ad mortem: multimodal discourses and ideologies in Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter (non)humorous memes

This paper reports the findings of a study two automatically generated corpora multimodal digital items user-tagged as ‘Black Lives Matter memes’ and ‘Blue memes’. The central aim is to flesh out memetic trends representing discourses ideologies on Black blue memescape, which explored in wake most infamous but interest-generating tragedy history Blue movement, namely George Floyd's death at hands white police officer Derek Chauvin. Studied through Multimodal Critical Discourse Analytic lens, internet memes are shown contribute polyvocal political discussion and, with some neutral or ambiguous exceptions, display positive (pro-) – more often negative (anti-) stance each opposite movements (with anti-BLM consituting largest category dataset). Also, contrary well-entrenched conceptualisation type humour, majority hand manifest no humorous potential. Humour present mainly among negative-stance memes, points disparagement target concomitant humour this serious topic.
