چکیده

Abstract Safety issues related to climate change are one of the major challenges modern society. One most significant risks is represented by extreme flood events which could lead dike or earth dam breaching with catastrophic consequences for environment. Despite relevance these infrastructure and advanced sensing technologies, safety monitoring carried out as it has been centuries visual inspections. In best case, traditional point sensors, like piezometers, installed in some limited sections. this way not possible early identify problem sections, can be located many km away from observation point. research an attempt made order develop a distributed fiber optical system monitoring. The core novel pore water pressure unit, form specifically designed optic cable.. development first promising results laboratory testing on industrially produced prototypes cable presented paper.

Paradigm Shifts in Monitoring Levees and Earthen Dams: Distributed Fiber Optic Monitoring Systems

Earthen embankments including levees, tailings dams, and earthen dams present many challenging problems for Civil Engineers, particularly in verification of their structural integrity and capacity, operation and maintenance (O&M), inspection, and safety. The sheer size and scale, age, and uncertainty of materials in these sometimes mammoth structures, all combine to present a difficult array of...

Monitoring of Railway Deformations using Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors

Natural phenomena like earthquakes, landslides, avalanches or mud flows can cause severe damages of railway tracks. Today’s monitoring concepts either focus on a permanent monitoring of known problematic sites or an epochwise measurement of the railway track with special measurement cars. In this paper we present a new approach for continuous monitoring of railway tracks over long distances. Th...

Long-Range Pipeline Monitoring by Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing

Distributed fiber optic sensing presents unique features that have no match in conventional sensing techniques. The ability to measure temperatures and strain at thousands of points along a single fiber is particularly interesting for the monitoring of elongated structures such as pipelines, flow lines, oil wells, and coiled tubing. Sensing systems based on Brillouin and Raman scattering are us...
