Feminist literary revisionism and the #MeToo movement

In the years since #MeToo movement began, there has been a resurgence of feminist retellings ancient myth. Novels such as Pat Barker’s The Silence Girls (2018), Madeline Miller’s Circe Natalie Haynes’s A Thousand Ships (2019) and Jennifer Saint’s Ariadne (2021) form cohort books regularly appearing on bestseller charts award shortlists. This paper traces rising popularity contemporary revisions classical myth explores ways in which works utilise to depict modern concerns. Revisionary mythmaking is defined against other traditional literature, biblical narratives fairytales, locating appeal “origin-figure” Penelope, Queen Ithaca wife Odysseus. Identifying Barbara Clayton’s Penelopean Poetics (2004) Margaret Atwood’s Penelopiad (2005) two – one theoretical, creative that expound methodology revisionism, this demonstrates how revisionist mode presents writers with rich rewarding vehicle for engaging conversation, particularly when mining material also argues examining novels over short stories poetry collections because form’s connections emergence from epic.
