Feminist institutionalism and women’s political leadership in devolution era Scotland

Scotland is a leading example of the international institutional turn in feminism since late twentieth century. Feminist activists played role shaping new Scottish Parliament 1980s and 1990s, which has influenced politics devolution 1999. This article appraises this experience using combination feminist texts drawn from across time period as well autobiographies biographies prominent female politicians. The findings demonstrate that feminine political leadership been strongly moulded by rejection Westminster’s archaic conflictual politics, are understood to be masculine. Feminists’ experiences organising Women’s Liberation Movement pointed importance institution building pragmatically working towards shared goals traditional divisions. feminists’ emphasis on consensus decision making achieving objectives party lines, especially subjects gender-coded women’s issues, centre-left framing for rejects both conservatism left-wing radicalism. achievement aspirations surrounding increased representation perhaps come at cost larger earlier ambitions more inclusive parliament accountable working-class communities. These suggest there inherent limitations based elite networks.
