Fatigue crack initiation and growth behavior within varying notch geometries in the low‐cycle fatigue regime for FV566 turbine blade material

چکیده

Plain bend bars made from FV566 martensitic stainless steel were extracted the root of ex-service power plant turbine blades and several industry-relevant notch geometries introduced. Some samples shot peened. The notched loaded plastically in low-cycle fatigue regime finite element (FE) modeling carried out to investigate effects changing geometry, combined with peening, on behaviors such as crack initiation, short growth, coalescence. Shot peening damaged surface, accelerating initiation behaviors, but had a lifetime-extending effect by retarding growth all tested geometries. At total strain range higher than 1.2%, lifetime extension benefit was diminished due compressive residual stress relaxation field. Notch geometry (and associated varying constraint levels stress/strain gradients) found have no notable difference life when at identical notch-root ranges.

3 - D analysis of fatigue crack behaviour in a shot peened steam turbine blade material

Serial mechanical sectioning and high resolution X-ray tomography have been used to study the three-dimensional morphology of small fatigue cracks growing in a 12 Cr tempered martensitic steam turbine blade material. A range of surface conditions has been studied, namely polished and shot peened (with varying levels of intensity). In the polished (unpeened) condition, inclusions (alumina and ma...

An Outrun Competition of Corrosion Fatigue and Stress Corrosion Cracking on Crack Initiation in a Compressor Blade

First row rotating blades of four axial-flow compressors were prematurely fractured. Previous investigations showed that the site atmosphere contains corrosive compounds which lead to an increase in possibility of pitting on the blades. It was also revealed that the crack was originated from two corrosion pits. Thus, this work is conducted to ascertain which of fatigue or stress corrosion crack...

Side Effects of Shot Peening on Fatigue Crack Initiation Life

Shot peening beneficial effects on fatigue life of mechanical components are well known. However, there are some reports in the literature that indicate inappropriate shot peening parameters tend to reduce the fatigue life. It is therefore, the purpose of this study to find a logical quantitative justification for these observations. Using finite element method, a dynamic elastic-plastic simula...
