Fate and availability of dust-borne phosphorus in a sub-humid temperate forest

چکیده
Aeolian dust deposition is an important phosphorus (P) input to terrestrial ecosystems, but it lacks evidence of how inputs supply available P and affect geochemistry dynamics in soils sub-humid ecosystems. We determined soil speciation using K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy availability modified Hedley sequential chemical extractions a weakly acidic profile (2.5 m thick) temperate forest ecosystem. The receives substantial that account for 34.8% - 53.5% the mass at depths based on Sr isotope analysis. topsoils (5 < pH 5.5) contain Ca-bound (Ca-P) accounts 4%–18% total P. Since Ca-P compounds are unstable transform other forms 5.5, continuous materials rich must occur sustain considerable topsoils. Across all depths, positively correlates with labile Pi (both resin NaHCO3 extracted) proportion, suggesting dissolution dust-borne replenishes pool. On hand, weathering Fe-rich dusts leads formation abundant iron oxides turn favors occluded (44–85%) Fe (and Al)-bound (57–83%), which may fix released from reduce long term. Interestingly, saprolite layer has unexpectedly high degree nearly depleted Ca-P, likely caused by increase moisture microbial activities accordingly weathering. Our study identifies subsequent availability. also highlights aeolian ecosystem not only acting as bioavailable source altering chemistry

Leaf area relationships to plant vegetative characteristics in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in a temperate sub-humid environment
Measurement or estimation of leaf area is essential for understanding crop responses to experimental treatments. The objective of this study was to develop regression models for estimating leaf area of field-grown cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) from measurements of leaf dry weight (LDW), vegetative components (stems and leaves) dry weight (VDW) and plant height (PH). Three cotton cultivars (Del...

We used the Hedley sequential fractionation scheme to assess phosphorus (P) chemistry of a strongly weathered soil from a humid lowland forest in Panama. Our analyses were part of a factorial experiment of nitrogen, P, and potassium addition, with nutrients added annually, i.e. a chronic input. The aim was to examine changes in soil P chemistry with 7 years of nutrient addition for soils collec...

15 صفحه اولLeaf nitrogen and phosphorus of temperate desert plants in response to climate and soil nutrient availability
In desert ecosystems, plant growth and nutrient uptake are restricted by availability of soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). The effects of both climate and soil nutrient conditions on N and P concentrations among desert plant life forms (annual, perennial and shrub) remain unclear. We assessed leaf N and P levels of 54 desert plants and measured the corresponding soil N and P in shallow (0-1...
