Fast and dynamic urban neighbourhood energy simulation using CFDf-CFDc-BES coupling method

Building energy simulation (BES) tools show limitations in calculations of the convective heat transfer exchange with surrounding urban areas. Therefore, dynamic coupling BES to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques is a common strategy improve performance. Nonetheless, itself understood be computationally intensive and unaffordable even simplistic neighbourhood-scale scenarios. This paper proposes novel framework for integration high-resolution CFD model (CFDf) into coupled low-resolution (CFDc) BES. In specific, CFDf (fine grids) operates as off-line component whole procedure that provides boundary conditions, including flow patterns, CFDc (coarse at openings form mass information start iterative process. After that, domains execute fully external deliver an accurate simulation. A case study designed simple neighbourhood on typical hot day sheltered buildings night-purge cooling. The results highlight significant improvement representing effect substantial reduction computation cost procedure.
