Farmers employ diverse cover crop management strategies to meet soil health goals

چکیده
Cover crops (CCs) were used on only ?5% of harvested cropland in the United States 2017. Lack information about effective CC management and costs benefits CCs may contribute to low adoption. We use data from 112 farms Soil Health Partnership network (2015–2021) characterize practices costs. farmers spent a median US$98.84 per hectare plant trial fields 2021 crop year, varied with practices. Farmers also experimented practices; more than half 100 providing panel one seeding method, share “planting green” increased over time. This diversity practices, heterogeneity (and benefits), experimentation process—among other factors—may make it challenging for develop expectations whether will be profitable their farm short, medium, or long-run.

متن کاملCrop management effects on soil carbon sequestration on selected farmersメ fields in northeastern Ohio
Soil organic carbon (SOC) pool is the largest among terrestrial pools. The restoration of SOC pool in arable lands represents a potential sink for atmospheric CO2. Restorative management of SOC includes using organic manures, adopting legume-based crop rotations, and converting plow till to a conservation till system. A field study was conducted to analyze soil properties on two farms located i...
متن کاملEnhanced Pest Management with Cover Crop Mulches
Living and dead plant vegetation on the surface of soils can provide opportunities for regulating pest populations in no-tillage production systems. Cover crops generate substantial quantities of surface vegetation and residue that can be managed to enhance control of pests. Research at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center has shown that weed germination and emergence is inhibited by hig...
