Faranoff-Riley type I jet deceleration at density discontinuities Relativistic hydrodynamics with realistic equation of state
Context. The deceleration mechanisms for relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei remain an open question, and in this paper we propose a model which could explain sudden jet deceleration, invoking density discontinuities. This is particularly motivated by recent indications from HYbrid MOrphology Radio Sources, suggesting that in some case Fanaroff-Riley classification is induced by variati...
متن کاملEffect of deceleration on jet instability
A non-parallel analysis of time-oscillatory instability of conical jets reveals important features not found in prior studies. Flow deceleration significantly enhances the shearlayer instability for both swirl-free and swirling jets. In swirl-free jets, flow deceleration causes the axisymmetric instability (absent in the parallel approximation). The critical Reynolds number Rea for this instabi...
متن کاملProcesses at Discontinuities
Leyton [1988] developed a set of rules by which process-history can be recovered from smooth natural shapes such as out l ines of tumors, clouds, or islands. In this paper, we extend this analysis to deal w i t h shapes w i t h first-order discontinuit ies such as corners, creases and cusps. A simple extension to the notat ion al lows one extra rule to cover most of these phenomena.
متن کاملUnified schemes for active galaxies: a clue from the missing Fanaroff-Riley type I quasar population
We link the lack of FR I type structure among quasars to the void of radio loud quasars below a critical disk luminosity of ∼ 10 erg/sec in the PG sample. We argue that the opening angle of the obscuring torus in radio loud quasars depends on the power of the central engine, approaching the jet’s beaming angle near the FR I/FR II break. Consequently, low power radio quasars would either be clas...
