Failure to Find Intercellular Protoplasmic Continuity in Griffithsia Globulifera
A method was devised for estimtaing the electrical resistance between the cytoplasm of adjacent cells of the red marine alga Griffithsia globulifera. A very high resistance was found, which argues strongly against the existence of protoplasmic continuity in this species.
متن کاملIntercellular Bridges as Protoplasmic Anastomoses between Smooth Muscle Cells
In electron microscopic studies, protoplasmic anastomoses were found to occur between smooth muscle cells in the gastrointestinal tracts of rats. The protoplasmic connections are apparently cylindrical in form and contain cytoplasm having a density similar to that of the cellular regions connected. The membranes enclosing the cytoplasmic connections are continuous with the membranes of the conn...
متن کاملFailure to find bound ascorbic acid in plasma.
The fact that in experimental scurvy the concentration of ascorbic acid in the cellular elements of blood decreases more slowly than does the concentration in plasma (24) has led to the hypothesis that ascorbic acid might be bound’ to cellular protein (5, 6). There is, however, little direct evidence to support such a hypothesis. Saha, Majumdar, and Guha (7, 8) demonstrated the presence of boun...
متن کاملFailure to find symmetry in pigeons after multiple exemplar training.
BACKGROUND An experiment with pigeons was conducted for 46 months in order to test the multiple-exemplar training (MET) hypothesis of symmetry derivation. According to this hypothesis, symmetry is progressively derived after an extensive training of multiple examples of direct and inverse relations among arbitrary stimuli. METHOD Four pigeons were given extensive training in direct (e.g., A1-...
متن کاملProtoplasmic Potentials in Halicystis
The potential difference across the protoplasm of impaled cells of two American species of Halicystis is compared. The mean value for H. Osterhoutii is 68.4 mv.; that for H. ovalis is 79.7 mv., the sea water being positive to the sap in both. The higher potential of H. ovalis is apparently due to the higher concentration of KCl (0.3 M) in its vacuolar sap. When the KCl content of H. Osterhoutii...
