Factors Determining the Natural Fresh?Salt Groundwater Distribution in Deltas

چکیده

Most river deltas are densely populated areas with intensive agriculture. The increased shortage of fresh surface water that results from rising demands expected to lead groundwater pumping, which leads sea intrusion. To correctly project the future resources in deltas, knowing current fresh-salt distribution is a prerequisite. However, uncertainties about these distributions and their drivers large. understand uncertainties, we conducted global sensitivity analysis complex three-dimensional variable-density model synthetic delta, simulating effect last glacial low stand subsequent marine transgression. unique its wide range geometries, hydrogeological parameterizations, boundary conditions analyzed, making it representative for large number worldwide. We find aquifer hydraulic conductivity most uncertain input has strong nonmonotonous on total salt mass onshore. calculated were classified into five classes compared real-world case studies. salinity inversions occur deltaic systems high system anisotropies as remnant These observed half cases, indicating not dynamic equilibrium. conclude very likely past transgressions still reflected deltas. This makes paleo-groundwater modeling prerequisite effective simulation present-day systems.

Natural Variations in the Composition of Groundwater

It is commonly believed that the composition of groundwater does not change naturally. So if a change is recognized through taste and/or odor, many may think that something bad has happened. Perhaps the aquifer has become contaminated, or something is wrong with the well. However, a common cause of changes in water quality is through natural variations within the aquifer. What gives groundwater...

Medical Hydrogeology of Asian Deltas: Status of Groundwater Toxicants and Nutrients, and Implications for Human Health

Drinking water, a fluid primarily for human hydration, is also a source of mineral nutrients. Groundwater, a drinking water source for more than 70% of inhabitants living in Asian deltas, has received much attention because of its naturally occurring arsenic, but the linkage of arsenic toxicity with other water constituents has not been studied. In addition, although nutrients are generally pro...
