Factors affecting treatment adherence among leprosy patients: Perceptions of healthcare providers

BackgroundTreatment adherence is a vital aspect in the management of chronic diseases like leprosy; however, most studies on treatment focus patients. This study aims to examine perceptions healthcare providers factors that can promote or prevent patients from adhering treatment.MethodsWe conducted three group discussions (FGDs) with who have at least one year experience managing leprosy large case-holding hospitals Metro Manila, Philippines. We audio-recorded, transcribed, translated FGD proceedings, and analyzed transcripts thematically identify patient-intrinsic patient-extrinsic enablers barriers patients.ResultsPatient-intrinsic motivators complete include innate desire be cured, fear infecting family friends, disability, good knowledge about disease, need for medical clearance considered fit work, experiencing reactions. Patient-extrinsic free treatment, immediate sufficient counselling, flexibility follow-up motivation workers, presence Hansen’s Club support groups. Patient-intrinsic distance between residence hospital, financial opportunity costs, adverse drug reactions, misconceptions being disabilities stubbornness and/or laziness, undergoing clinical depression. poor availability MDT, transfer other facilities without informing current facility, stigma.ConclusionHealthcare perceive influence through different mechanisms. highlight role provider attitudes, stigma, groups promoting adherence.
