Extremely rapid up-and-down motions of island arc crust during arc-continent collision

چکیده
Abstract Mountain building and the rock cycle often involve large vertical crustal motions, but their rates timescales in unmetamorphosed rocks remain poorly understood. We utilize high-resolution magneto-biostratigraphy backstripping analysis of marine deposits an active arc-continent suture zone eastern Taiwan to document short cycles oscillations. A basal unconformity formed on Miocene volcanic arc crust uplifting forebulge starting ~6 Ma, followed by rapid foredeep subsidence at 2.3–3.2 mm yr −1 (~3.4–0.5 Ma) response oceanward-migrating flexural wave. Since ~0.8–0.5 has undergone extremely (~9.0–14.4 ) uplift form modern Coastal Range during transpressional strain. The northern sector may have recently entered another phase related a subduction polarity reversal. These transient motions are under-detected thermochronologic methods, likely characteristic continental growth accretion over geologic timescales.

The Nature of the Banda Arc–Continent Collision in the Timor Region
Arc continent collision is one of the most fundamental tectonic processes for the formation of new land, and the preservation on land of fragments of oceanic lithosphere (ophiolites). However, the tectonic evolution of arc continent collision is commonly over-simplified in everything from introductory textbooks to complex tectonic models. Major unresolved issues include the response of the fore...

Paleotemperature indicators and apatite fission track analysis of Australian continental margin cover sequeRces accreted to the active Banda arc-continent collision indicate little to no heating during rapid late Neogene uplift and exhumation. Thermal maturation patterns of vitrinite reflectance, conodont alteration and' illite crystallinity show that peak paleotemperatures (PPT) increase with ...
متن کاملMelt inclusions from Marianas arc lavas: implications for the composition and formation of island arc magmas
We have measured the major and trace element compositions of a suite of olivine-hosted melt inclusions in basaltic lavas from the islands of Agrigan and Guguan (one sample each) from the Mariana arc, part of the larger Izu–Bonin–Mariana system. The two lava samples examined show distinctly different chemical signatures that are considered to represent the dominance of sediment melt (Agrigan) or...
متن کاملTrench-parallel anisotropy produced by foundering of arc lower crust.
Many volcanic arcs display fast seismic shear-wave velocities parallel to the strike of the trench. This pattern of anisotropy is inconsistent with simple models of corner flow in the mantle wedge. Although several models, including slab rollback, oblique subduction, and deformation of water-rich olivine, have been proposed to explain trench-parallel anisotropy, none of these mechanisms are con...
