Extreme Sea-Surface Cooling Induced by Eddy Heat Advection During Tropical Cyclone in the North Western Pacific Ocean

چکیده

A tropical cyclone (TC) usually induces strong sea-surface cooling due to vertical mixing. In turn, surface influences the intensities and tracks of TCs. Therefore, relationship between temperature (SST) TC is one important components air-sea interaction. Sea-surface associated with three TCs (Bailu, Lingling, Mitag) was investigated based on wave-glider observations, satellite altimetry, Massachusetts Institute Technology General Circulation Model (MITgcm) numerical experiments from August 3rd October 10th, 2019. Surface varied among Lingling had nearest distance position, slowest translation speed, strongest intensity TCs, but extreme (1.4) occurred during Bailu. Although MITgcm underestimated cooling, SST trend driven by net heat flux, advection, mixing within mixed layer greater Bailu than other Advection largest balance terms Bailu, while it quite small two Interestingly, at position preexisting warm eddy. Based analysis, we found that eddy-induced advection transport reached ?0.4/day, contributing 60% balance; this attributed via eddy disturbance. We suggest leads decrease in increase area cold eddy, then, cooled-enlarged advected neighbored wave glider, which observes cooling. These findings provide utilization gliders help improve coupled models

Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Intensity and ENSO

The influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on tropical cyclone intensity in the western North Pacific basin is examined. Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), constructed from the best-track dataset for the region for the period 1950–2002, and other related variables are analyzed. ACE is positively correlated with ENSO indices. This and other statistics of the interannually varying tr...

The Interaction of Supertyphoon Maemi (2003) with a Warm Ocean Eddy

Understanding the interaction of ocean eddies with tropical cyclones is critical for improving the understanding and prediction of the tropical cyclone intensity change. Here an investigation is presented of the interaction between Supertyphoon Maemi, the most intense tropical cyclone in 2003, and a warm ocean eddy in the western North Pacific. In September 2003, Maemi passed directly over a pr...

The Effect of the Ocean Eddy on Tropical Cyclone Intensity

It has been widely recognized that the ocean supplies surface heat fluxes and therefore energy to tropical cyclones (TCs). The TC can induce the sea surface temperature (SST) cooling (Price 1981) associated with both the entrainment/mixing and upwelling processes. In turn, the SST cooling near the storm core exerts influence on the TC intensity. This negative feedback to the TC intensity is cle...

Effects of surface heat flux-induced sea surface temperature changes on tropical cyclone intensity

[1] It is known that in deep and open oceans, the effect of sea surface sensible and evaporative heat fluxes on the tropical cyclone-induced sea surface cooling is small compared to that caused by turbulent mixing and cold water entrainment into the upper ocean mixed-layer. This study shows that tropical cyclone-induced surface heat fluxes dominate the surface cooling in near-coastal shallow oc...
