Explosive eruptions at Stromboli volcano (Italy): a comprehensive geochemical view on magma sources and intensity range

چکیده
Abstract A comprehensive understanding of the processes that occur during magmatic storage and pre-eruptive ascent—and their associated timescales—is critical to identifying potential precursory signals, developing robust volcano early-warning systems. Stromboli’s persistent activity comprises continuous degassing explosive ranges from hourly, low-intensity “normal” occasional, more violent, paroxysmal activity. While magma source drive normal are reasonably constrained, eruptive intermediate in magnitude intensity (i.e., major explosions) remains elusive terms classification, region, timescales. Here, we investigate 19 July 2020 explosion geophysical parameters place at upper limit explosions field, close small-scale paroxysms such as 2003 2007 events. The geochemical signatures matrix glass, olivine, melt inclusions, embayments—integrated with gas measurements—highlight important differences eruption source, ascent behaviour, timescales studied event when compared paroxysms. Melt inclusion volatile contents identify rise begins a slightly shallower (~9.5 km below sea level, b.s.l.) than for (11.4 b.s.l.), activation ponding zone 5–6 b.s.l.. This, combination glass compositions, suggests complex characterised by CO 2 buffering deep region self-mixing zone. Fe–Mg-diffusion modelling olivine indicates system perturbation starting ~20–25 days before onset, agreement timescale volcanic /SO ratio changes observed plume, significantly shorter prior (~4 months). dataset provides insights into controlling steady-state conditions broad spectra Stromboli bears implications forecasting.

The decompression rate of magma as it ascends during volcanic eruptions is an important but poorly constrained parameter that controls many of the processes that influence eruptive behavior. In this study, we quantify decompression rates for basaltic magmas using volatile diffusion in olivine-hosted melt tubes (embayments) for three contrasting eruptions of Kīlauea volcano, Hawaii. Incomplete e...
متن کاملEvidence for Recent Large Magnitude Explosive Eruptions at Damavand Volcano, Iran with Implications for Volcanic Hazards
Damavand is a large dormant stratovolcano in the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran located in one of the most populous provinces, which could be adversely affected by tephra fall from Damavand. The youngest known eruption is a lava flow on the western flanks with an age of 7.3 ka. The volcanic products are predominantly porphyritic trachyandesite. Three major young pumice deposits, named here a...
متن کاملDecrypting geophysical signals at Stromboli Volcano (Italy): Integration of seismic and Ground-Based InSAR displacement data
We present the integration of seismic and Ground-Based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar system (GBInSAR) displacement data at Stromboli Volcano. Ground deformation in the area of summit vents is positively correlated with both seismic tremor amplitude and cumulative amplitudes of very long period (VLP) signals associated with Strombolian explosions. Changes in VLP amplitudes precede by ...
متن کاملReal-time inversion of VLP source functions at Stromboli Volcano, Italy
We present a comprehensive processing tool for the real-time analysis of the source mechanism of Very-Long-Period (VLP) seismic data based on waveform inversions performed in the frequency domain for a point source. A search for the source providing the best-fitting solution is conducted over a three-dimensional grid of assumed source locations, in which the Green’s functions associated with ea...
