Exploring Ocean Floor Geodiversity in Relation to Mineral Resources in the Southwest Pacific Ocean

چکیده
The future extraction of mineral resources may irreversibly damage ocean floor geodiversity in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Therefore, understanding spatial distribution relation to is important. For that purpose, we first developed a index map western Ocean including information openly available digital layers four components: seafloor geomorphology, sediment thickness, bathymetry and roughness. Second, analysed how these components contributed index. Finally, correlations between three (seafloor massive sulphides, polymetallic nodules cobalt-rich crusts) index, its components, age were calculated. results showed environment time necessary for formation predominantly related component floor, lesser extent roughness, geomorphology thickness components. We conclude contribute an improved abiotic diversity can be optimized by using higher resolution data. suggest could considered resource support responsible mining help limit environmental damage.

Regional climate variability and ocean heat transport in the southwest Pacific Ocean
The winter of 1992 was the coldest on record in New Zealand since the 1940s. Temperatures in New Zealand were as much as 3øC below average, with heavy rain and unusual snow. The oceanic surface layer in the southwest Pacific was also anomalously cold over the same period. A World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) hydrographic section (P14C) between Auckland and Fiji during September 1992 foun...
متن کاملOcean acidification of the North Pacific Ocean
The addition of fossil fuel carbon dioxide to the atmosphere is rapidly changing seawater chemistry and the calcium carbonate saturation state of the world’s oceans as a result of the acidifying effects of CO2 on seawater. This acidification makes it more difficult for many marine organisms (e.g., corals, plankton, calcareous algae, and mollusks) to build skeletons, tests, and shells of calcium...
متن کاملOcean noise in the tropical and subtropical Pacific Ocean.
Ocean ambient noise is well studied in the North Pacific and North Atlantic but is poorly described for most of the worlds' oceans. Calibrated passive acoustic recordings were collected during 2009-2010 at seven locations in the central and western tropical and subtropical Pacific. Monthly and hourly mean power spectra (15-1000 Hz) were calculated in addition to their skewness, kurtosis, and pe...
متن کاملCalls reveal population structure of blue whales across the southeast Indian Ocean and the southwest Pacific Ocean.
For effective species management, understanding population structure and distribution is critical. However, quantifying population structure is not always straightforward. Within the Southern Hemisphere, the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) complex is extremely diverse but difficult to study. Using automated detector methods, we identified "acoustic populations" of whales producing region-spe...
متن کاملMiocene to recent eolian dust record from the Southwest Pacific Ocean at 40° S latitude
A 14-meter long pelagic clay core recovered at Marlin Rise (40°00.531′S, 154°2.601′W; 4775 m water depth) in the Southwest Pacific Basin contains a record of eolian dust deposited since the early Miocene. Downcore analysis of detrital minerals reveals a dominantly eolian signature with relatively constant proportions of quartz, feldspar and illite and trace amounts of chlorite, kaolinite and sm...
