Exploring Maternal Interactions During Shared Book Readings in Indian Home Contexts

Abstract The importance of parent-child shared book reading (SBR) is well established. However, there a limited understanding parental interaction patterns during SBR among preschool children in the Indian context. Using cross-sectional observational study design, mothers’ verbal and nonverbal behavior was analyzed 26 Kannada-speaking mother-child dyads. Relationships between quantity experiences attitudes beliefs about storybook were examined. Findings revealed that mothers predominantly used dialogic strategies followed by extra-textual talk, print referencing strategies, strategies. Few correlations found experiences. Implications for parent training are discussed.
