Explicit and Differentiated Phonics Instruction on Pupils’ Literacy Skills in Gambian Lower Basic Schools

Instructional procedures in literacy skills Gambian classrooms often adopt the conventional direct approach which includes spelling-reading-dictation without due attention to sound/letter connection. Although English remain fundamental proof of formal education Gambia, proficiency reading and writing is very low among most pupils lower basic schools. Phonics instruction reinforces letter-sound relationship improves spelling. phonics has been found be effective for teaching EFL students, there not much research on classrooms. This study investigated effects explicit differentiated instructional strategies achievement skills. The moderating effect parental involvement was equally examined. adopted a pretest-posttest, control group quasi-experimental design using 164 from four randomly selected schools, treatment lasted six weeks. result showed significant main pupils’ (F (2; 125) = 65.485) 26.67).
