چکیده

Turbulent Taylor–Couette flow between two concentric independently rotating cylinders with a radius ratio of $\eta = 0.1$ is studied experimentally. While the scope to study counter-rotating cases both cylinders, radial and azimuthal velocity components are recorded at different horizontal planes high-speed particle image velocimetry. The parametric considered set shear Reynolds numbers in range $20\,000 \leq Re_s 1.31 \times 10^5$ , rotation ratios $-0.06 \mu +0.008$ . observed fields had clear dependence on ratio, where patterns evolved more pronounced axial dependence. angular momentum transport computed as result given by quasi-Nusselt number. Nusselt number shows maximum for low case $\mu _{max}$ found $-0.011 < _{max} -0.0077$ decreases stronger counter-rotation until minimum reached, it tends increase again higher rates. space–time behaviour turbulent showed existence propagating from inner region towards outer all cases. In addition, have been that tend propagate novel character high These enhance second mechanism has be expected.

Statistics of turbulent fluctuations in counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flows.

The statistics of velocity fluctuations of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow are examined. The rotation rates of the inner and outer cylinders are varied while keeping the Taylor number fixed to 1.49×10(12) [O(Re)=10(6)]. The azimuthal velocity component of the flow is measured using laser Doppler anemometry. For each experiment 5×10(6) data points are acquired and carefully analyzed. Using extende...

Large numerical simulations of turbulent rotating flows

Scientific context Rotation, as measured by the Rossby number (the ratio of the rotation period to the eddy turn over time) is present in astroand geophysics. For example, the high Reynolds number large scales of atmospheric and oceanic flows are affected by the rotation of the Earth; the Rossby number Ro = U0/[L0Ω] for mid-latitude atmospheric synoptic scales is Ro ≈ 0.1 whereas in the solar c...

Coherent Structures and Extreme Events in Rotating Multiphase Turbulent Flows

By using direct numerical simulations (DNS) at unprecedented resolution, we study turbulence under rotation in the presence of simultaneous direct and inverse cascades. The accumulation of energy at large scale leads to the formation of vertical coherent regions with high vorticity oriented along the rotation axis. By seeding the flowwithmillions of inertial particles, wequantify—for the first t...

Experimental Investigation of Impinging Axisymmetric Turbulent Fountains

The behaviour of a turbulent, axisymmetric, Boussinesq, vertical fountain that impinges on a horizontal plate a distance H from the fountain source is investigated. Images from Light Induced Fluorescence visualisation of the flow provide a clear picture of the internal structure of the impinging flow. The interaction between the impinging fountain and the plate results in a buoyant radial wall ...

An Experimental Investigation on the Characteristics of Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows Over a Dimpled Surface

An experimental investigation was conducted to quantify the characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer flows over a dimpled surface in comparison to those over a conventional flat plate. In addition to measuring surface pressure distributions to determine the friction factors of the test plates and to map the surface pressure inside the dimple cavity, a high-resolution digital particle ima...
