Experimental Constraints on the Rheology of Lavas From 2021 Cumbre Vieja Eruption (La Palma, Spain)

چکیده

The 2021 Tajogaite eruption of Cumbre Vieja (La Palma, Spain) was typified by the emission low viscosity lavas that flowed at high velocities and inundated a large area. We experimentally investigated rheological evolution melt feeding through concentric cylinder viscometry to understand exceptional flowing ability these constrain its emplacement dynamics. conducted set cooling deformation experiments different rates (from 0.1 10 °C/min), isothermal subliquidus dwell temperatures between 1225 1175°C. All were shear rate s?1. Results show disequilibrium crystallization timescale fundamentally control melt, resulting in response crystal-bearing magmatic suspension. Integrating data with field observations allows us shed light on mechanisms govern flowability lavas.

Internal structure of the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, La Palma, Canary Islands, from land magnetotelluric imaging

[1] Large‐scale mass wasting is a natural part of the evolution of volcanic islands, where deformation and indications of flank instability, such as large‐scale faulting and seismic and aseismic slip are common. The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) provides an ideal setting to address fundamental questions about the structure, evolution and stability of island vol...

Cumbre Vieja Volcano -- Potential collapse and tsunami at La Palma, Canary Islands

Geological evidence suggests that during a future eruption, Cumbre Vieja Volcano on the Island of La Palma may experience a catastrophic failure of its west flank, dropping 150 to 500 km of rock into the sea. Using a geologically reasonable estimate of landslide motion, we model tsunami waves produced by such a collapse. Waves generated by the run-out of a 500 km (150 km) slide block at 100 m/s...

Constraints on rheology of obsidian lavas based on mesoscopic folds

The geometry of mesoscopic single and multiple layer folds in rhyolitic obsidian ̄ows is investigated. Folds are composed of obsidian embedded in a matrix of pumice. Folds form by buckling processes as indicated by discontinuous deformation between obsidian and pumice layers and by the geometries of wavetrains. Buckling occurs through a continuum of styles controlled largely by the thickness ra...

Numerical modeling of tsunami waves generated by the flank collapse of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano (La Palma, Canary Islands): Tsunami source and near field effects

[1] In this work, we study waves generated by the potential collapse of the west flank of the Cumbre Vieja Volcano (CVV; La Palma, Canary Island, Spain) through numerical simulations performed in two stages: (i) the initial slide motion and resulting free surface elevation are first calculated using a 3D Navier-Stokes model; (ii) generated waves are then input into a 2D (horizontal) Boussinesq ...

Ar/Ar ages from transitionally magnetized lavas on La Palma, Canary Islands, and the geomagnetic instability timescale

[1] A detailed study of 43 lava flows comprising two stratigraphic sequences exposed along the north and south walls of Barranco de los Tilos on the island of La Palma, Canary Islands, reveals a complex, temporally segmented record of geodynamo behavior that contains no less than three distinct geomagnetic events. The Matuyama-Brunhes (M-B) reversal is recorded in five transitionally magnetized...
