Experimental assessment and prediction of temporal scour depth around a spur dike

Abstract Spur dikes are river training structures that have been extensively used worldwide for towards enhancing flood control and the stability of embankments riverbanks. However, scour around spur can be a major problem affecting their hydraulic performance. The precise computation temporal depth at is very important design economical safe dikes. This study focuses on experimentally assessing variation vertical wall dike identifying parameters, which mostly influence performance channel bed surface comprised sand-gravel mixtures. In current study, authors did physical experiments in flume based to obtain new data, aimed deriving predictive model comparing its others found literature. It was dimensionless increases with an increase (i) threshold velocity ratio, (ii) densimetric Froude number sediment mixture, (iii) flow shallowness (defined as ratio approach depth, y, dike’s transverse length, l), (iv) depth-particle size ratio. also concluded mixture influenced by non-uniformity decreases mixture. A mathematical derived estimation depths proposed equation has calibrated validated experimental demonstrating good capacity evolution.
