Experimental and numerical study of hot-rolled duplex stainless steel CHS columns

Stainless steel circular hollow section (CHS) members have been widely used in building structures because of their comparable strength to structural carbon steels, attractive appearance and excellent corrosion resistance. However, research on stainless CHS has limited cold-formed members, whereas hot-rolled columns received less attention. To this end, the flexural buckling performance duplex was investigated by a comprehensive experimental numerical programme. A total seven covering two cross-sectional sizes with varying lengths tested under compression. Based test results, finite element (FE) models were developed parametric studies generate data points wider range geometric dimensions. Comparing FE results current design guidance, it found that Chinese standard, CECS 410, North American AISC DG 27, underestimate significantly resistance such columns, while method Eurocode 3: Part 1–4 might be unsafe predicting resistances for low slenderness values. New column curves based 3 27 formulae improved accuracy reduced scatters also proposed validated through careful reliability analysis.
