Experiences of adult siblings of those with developmental coordination disorder (DCD): a qualitative study

Abstract This qualitative study explored the childhood experiences of growing up with a sibling Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) to offer an ‘outsider’s’ view this condition. Ten individuals who had grown DCD were interviewed about their experiences. Data analysed using Thematic Analysis. Analysis described three main themes: i)‘witnessing challenges for DCD’ ii) ‘experiencing impact on family’; iii) ‘a vacuum knowledge’. Not all negative and transcending these themes was notion ‘resolution finding benefit’ highlighting access support, being more empathic resilient, becoming role model others success. Participants play witness sibling’s which can often be sometimes impacted by knowledge but they also describe how diagnosis comes some benefits are discussed in context ‘posttraumatic growth’.
